Within the city of Denver is a system of 206 urban parks comprising about 4300 acres with picnic areas, playgrounds, golf courses, tennis courts, softball fields, fishing and boating lakes and swimming pools. The parks also have over 80 miles of paved trails for hiking, jogging, and bicycling, with more planned. Of special interest are City Park, which contains the Denver Zoo, the Museum Of Natural History and the Gates Planetarium; Denver Botanic Gardens; Cheeseman Memorial Park;Washington Park, with Colonial Gardens patterned after those of Mount Vernon; and Cranmer Park, which has an unusual Chinese sundial and a profile of the Continental Divide mountain peaks done in terrazzo. Denver mountain parks are unique. Maintained by the City and County of Denver, this system is comprised of 24 individual parks covering 14,000 acres west and southwest of thee city. All are readily accessible by and excellent network of highways. Five recreational areas are located in the Denver Metro area.
